    How much water do I add to coir bricks?

    The rule of thumb for rehydrating dry coco coir is to find the weight of your coco coir and add a volume of water roughly 10x the weight of the dry coco brick. For example, if we have a 600g dehydrated coco coir brick, we will need to add around 6000g (6L) of water.

    A good rule of thumb would be to water every four or five days. You also need to use a pot that provides good drainage, as your coco coir requires air as well as moisture to promote healthy plant growth. If there's too much moisture inside, there won't be enough air.

    If you add hydrating coco coir to sandy or clay soil, it will break up hard earth and help that area retain water. It's also easier to keep hydrated than other soil amendments such as peat moss.

    We would recommend a depth of around 3 inches for both Coco Coir and top soil to be sufficient. A great benefit to Coco Coir is that it naturally increases the humidity of the tortoises enclosure. As with top soil, you can also lightly spray the Coir to increase humidity should you wish to do so.

    The most common problem with coir is it can have an extremely high salt content, especially in lower grades. Coir high in salts should be leached before use. Coir has a lower cation-exchange capacity and it is high in phosphorous and potassium.

Tortoises need 2-3 inches of bedding for burrowing. Never use sand, walnut shells, cedar bedding, or alfalfa pellets.
